EM.Z. SVITZERs Bjergnings Entreprise deltager i rydningen af Suez Kanalen januar og februar 1957. Fotografiet stammer fra en serie med 43 fotos. Tekst bag på fotografiet: "Salvage work in the Suez Canal is proceeding at a normal rate. A temporary channel for the transit of ships up to 10,000 tons should be opened early in March, and the Canal should be cleared of all its obstructions in May, as anticipated by General Wheeler (US), who organized and supervises the clearance operation for the U.N. This picture, taken on 10. January, shows the U.N. salvage vessels working on the wreck of the sunken Egyptian landing craft "Akka", which went down with a cargo of cement and is considered one of the most serious obstacles facing the U.N. fleet in the Canal. The U.N. vessels "Switzer" (SVITZER), "Ausdauer", "Energie", "Wotan" and "Hermes" were placing small cables under the sunken ship. (At a later stage heavier cables for lifting will be pulled through; in addition, a sand dredger will dig on one side of the ship to create a pocket so as to straighten the vessel; then "camels" - which are large tanks full of air - will be placed around the ship; with the buoyancy created, cranes will then go to work to lift it.)"

The eastern section of the bridge was lifted and removed on 4 January."

As an example of the type of work done by the U.N. salvage fleet earlier this month six sunken tug boats were raised from the bottom of Port Said Harbour in eight days. Additional obstructions were also removed by the craft of the Anglo French fleet. This picture shows the Dutch floating crane "Arend" lifting the Egyptian tug "Barq" from the East part of the harbour on January 5, 1957."
